Rooted in Nature: A Journey of Exploration, Conservation, and Leadership
Nurturing a Connection in Nature
I spent the first half of my life in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where my love of nature was born and many foundational aspects of my character began to take shape. Growing up in a neighborhood with parks and green spaces, I learned the early value of outdoor exploration and the sense of wonder that comes with it. These environments not only fostered my connection to nature but also taught me the importance of community and the shared responsibility we have for the spaces around us. My parents, who believed in learning through experience, took us to zoos and aquariums, emphasizing the beauty of wildlife and the urgent need for conservation. Our visits to the Toledo Zoo and Monterey Bay Aquarium gave me the chance to learn about the importance of biodiversity and instilled in me a sense of responsibility for the natural world, reinforcing the idea that our relationship with nature is not just about enjoyment but about protecting it for future generations.
Expanding My Horizons in Texas
In 2012, I moved to Texas, where the diversity of ecosystems broadened my understanding of conservation. Eager to explore, I joined a local Girl Scout troop and participated in several camping trips to Texas parks, including Bastrop State Park, South Padre Island, and Pedernales Falls State Park. These trips exposed me to everything from coastal wetlands to hill country forests, helping me realize how unique ecosystems require tailored conservation strategies. Hiking through the fire-scarred Bastrop forests, observing wildlife in their habitats, and learning about the local flora and fauna fueled my passion for environmental conservation. My involvement in the troop also allowed me to develop leadership skills as I helped organize activities and shared my knowledge of environmental stewardship with younger scouts.
Pursuing Professional Growth in Wildlife Conservation
As my passion for environmental conservation continued to grow, I took further steps during college to pursue this interest professionally. I secured two summer internships in wildlife rehabilitation, where I worked directly with injured and orphaned animals. These internships allowed me to gain hands-on experience in species recovery and habitat restoration, providing me with a deeper understanding of the practical challenges involved in wildlife conservation. This experience solidified my desire to pursue a career in wildlife management, as I realized that meaningful conservation requires not only a passion for nature but also a deep understanding of the scientific, logistical, and ethical challenges that come with it.
Shaping My Skills Through College Extracurriculars
Alongside my internships, I engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities during college that further shaped my skills and interests. I joined the Aggie marching band, where I honed my musical skills and learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. The long hours of practice and the pressure of performance taught me how to work toward a common goal with a team, a skill that’s essential in any professional setting, including wildlife management. My membership in the Zoological Society allowed me to combine my love of animals with my commitment to conservation, collaborating with like-minded peers on initiatives that raised awareness about wildlife protection. Additionally, my involvement in the Corps of Cadets refined my leadership abilities in a structured and disciplined environment, where I learned to manage multiple responsibilities, build trust within teams, and thrive under pressure. Each of these activities, from music to conservation to leadership training, contributed to my personal growth and equipped me with a diverse skill set that is essential for a career in wildlife management.
